What is MS?
Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin — the insulating sheath around axons. The damaged regions are called lesions. Without intact myelin, action potentials slow dramatically, become unreliable, or fail to propagate entirely. This explains MS symptoms: muscle weakness, numbness, vision problems, and fatigue — all reflecting disrupted neural signaling across the nervous system.
